This place is famous for the delicious gizzard dish with its unique aromatic and chewy Dae-gu style.
When it opened in 1975, the marketplace was nothing special. But since several chicken butcheries became popular, pubs have started selling original dishes cooked with chicken by-products.
The gizzard dish came to be popular since a cook tried frying the gizzard and earned a great reputation among fans of food. That marked the start of the gizzard dish.
The tasty and affordable gizzard dish gained instant popularity among laborers. Accordingly, the selling competition was fiercer thus “gizzard street” was created in the marketplace.
Today there are more than 40 famous gizzard restaurants in the Pyong-hwa marketplace. The popularity is beyond the generation: not only older people sharing the history but also youths finding it interesting and delicious visit the street constantly.
I hope you enjoy the original gizzard dish in the city of Dae-gu hosting Chi-Maek, meaning Chicken & Beer Festival.
The street has driven the development of the whole city.
In addition, it is very convenient for shoppers to look around as there are two big markets, Chil-sung and Kyo-dong, adjacent to each other and multiple retail shops including the Dae-gu Department Store.
How about getting the chance to embrace such a dynamic city of Dae-gu here on Dong-sung street?

Gyeong-sang Gam-young was the provincial governor’s office founded back in 1601 which played a pivotal role in leading the Gyeong-sang province. Dae-gu became more influential since its establishment and over time it renewed itself as a place for the residents.
Gyeong-sang Gam-young is located around Jong-no, which has been the central avenue in the city since the early ages.
Jong-no borders on Yak-jun street, which is a special district for oriental medicine and continues the fame of the wholesale medicinal market in the Chosun Dynasty. The district is the only one of its kind across the nation.
Yak-jun street includes more than 350 oriental medicine retailers and you can smell the herbs all the time on the street. Every early May, the city welcomes visitors from all across the country to the Dae-gu Yang-nyeong-si Herb Medicine Festival.

Dae-gu City Bus Tour-Now we go back to more than 100 years ago, the modern times. We will stop at Modern Culture District.
This tour has been recognized as one of the top tours in Korea. It consists of five steps of guided walking and other programs such as night view tour, stamp punching tour, gourmet tour and theme tour.
The first step is to see the origin and history of Dae-gu (Dal-gu-bul), for example, the city’s status in a central administrative role in the Chosun Dynasty and its role as a growth engine for modern commercial development.
The second step is to see time-honored stories and traces. You can experience the modern culture of Dae-gu more than 100 years ago visiting the former residences of poet Sang-hwa Lee and national independence movement leader Sang-don Seo. You can also identify one of the nation’s top modern architecture.
The third step is to look around two different districts at the same time: fashion and oriental herb medicine. Kyo-dong, popular for the pretty accessories and jewelry and Dong-sung-no, famous for fashion are very close to the Yak-jun herb medicine street.
The fourth step is to walk along the Sam-duk Bong-san Culture Trail. The route begins from the National Debt Redemption Movement Commemoration Park, Sam-duk Culture Street and ends at Kim Gwang-suk (Late Korean singer) Street.
The last step is to look at the history of the city's religion along the trail of Nam-san nostalgic street. You can trace back to over 100 years ago through the stories of Buddhism, Protestantism, Catholicism and Confucianism.
Next is a night view tour. You can also embrace the historical flavor at a cultural rich location. This is based on a theme titled culture and modern history trailing from Ban-wol-dang in downtown and Gwan-duk-jung through houses of Lee Sang-hwa and Seo Sang-don to Young-nam Boulevard and Gyeong-sang Gam-young Park.
The modern district stamp-punching tour is also fun and even beneficial as it offers a variety of discount events for food, local products, performances and accommodations.

People in old times called this place ‘Dae-gu market’ when it was picked as one of the national top three along with Pyeong-yang market and Kang-gyeong market.
In the long past, the market was located on the outskirts of the old town of Dae-gu before moving into the area near Gyeong-sang Gam-young. Since the re-location it has been rapidly growing at a remarkable rate. It has been recognized as the provincial center for a 5-day market over the last decades.
Dae-gu has been called the ‘city of fabric’ for a long time. Now Dae-gu is well renowned for quality fabric and a fashion mecca living up to that nickname.
The marketplace is divided into six districts and more than 4,000 shops warmly welcoming customers far and wide.
They handle various products, for example, fabric materials like silk, linen and cotton, Korean traditional dresses, clothes, accessories, bedding goods, plates, fruits, vegetables, dried fish and seafood.
Popular dishes include Kal-guk-su (Noodle), Su-je-bi (Soup of flattened dough boiled with vegetables and seafood), Ttok-bok-ki, and Nab-jak-mandoo (Fried flattened dumpling). We hope you will have a chance to have an enjoyable shopping time.
Dal-sung Park is known as a zoo and let me explain the origin of the word ‘Dal-sung.’ Dal-sung was once a fortress located at the center of an old nation named ‘Dal-gu-bul.’
In the era of the Three Kingdoms, the area received such a splendid ancient tomb culture introduced by Silla, one of the three kingdoms. During the Koryo Dynasty, it was the village of Dal-sung Seo clan. In the Chosun dynasty, the then provincial governor stayed there for a while.
Since the park's foundation in 1905, it has remained as one of the most time-honored resting places for the residents holding over 2,000 years of history and tradition.
A zoo, learning room of local history and Gwan-poong Tower stand inside the well-managed park along with the fortress. You can also see several monuments including a statue of Je-woo Choi, the peasant revolution leader, a memorial stone for children, and a monument engraved with a poem written by Sang-hwa Lee.
If you want to embrace the city's energy, visit the marketplaces which start as early as 4 o’clock in the morning. It will be an unexpected look and an interesting experience.
How about encountering an old trip trail in the time-honored Dal-sung Park?
The building wielded a sign reading "Samsung Store". Samsung Group, the country’s popular company, originates from this small store.
